Unchecked power and bias in the media's coverage of Meghan Markle are troubling. Paris is a prime example of just how distorted the coverage has become.

The British media’s relentless lies and misinformation about Meghan Markle is an issue we should all be concerned about. It is shocking how the press can lash out at a woman, who is also a mother and wife, so loudly and persistently, with no oversight or consequences. This unchecked power is disturbing; it makes me wonder how easily this could happen to anyone who dares cross the media’s path. I struggle to understand why regulators have allowed this behavior to continue unchecked. The media is supposed to serve the public with accurate, factual information. Instead, they have targeted Meghan Markle for relentless harassment just for existing.
Since joining the royal family, Meghan has faced a barrage of harsh, often irrational backlash, primarily driven by prejudice and a desire for sensational headlines. Even recently in Paris, the scrutiny intensified without any objective justification. Since news of her relationship with Prince Harry first broke in 2016, Meghan has faced criticism that only grew after their marriage. Attacks often hinge on her identity: as an American, an actress, a divorcée, and a biracial woman. This is nothing more than deep-seated racism and xenophobia.

The tabloids have published misleading stories, and some accuse the press of focusing negative attention on Meghan to protect other royals, notably Prince William and Kate Middleton. Prominent figures like Jeremy Clarkson and Piers Morgan have exacerbated the situation with highly public and hostile comments. Even after leaving royal duties, Meghan remains a lightning rod: the recent frenzy over her driving in Paris, invoking Princess Diana’s fatal accident, was grossly exaggerated. She can do nothing right, it seems. Critics condemned her insensitivity solely based on her presence in the same city, ignoring all evidence to the contrary. On social media, reactions ranged from aggressive accusations to ridicule over the manufactured outrage. How outrageous is this?
Increasingly, people recognize that these persistent criticisms of Meghan reveal more about her critics than about her actions, as Stephanie Soteriou eloquently summarized in her recent BuzzFeed article. The case against Meghan Sussex is rarely fair or logical—and to her credit, Meghan has not responded to the latest round of unjust attacks, but she can’t; she would be fueling it more. Who can act on her behalf? Who should be responsible for ensuring the power of the media is under control and checked? It appears that Ofcom, the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), or Impress are not taking action. To allow this level of misinformation and harassment of a private citizen is unconscionable. The sad truth is that it could happen to any one of us.
Unchecked power and bias in the media's coverage of Meghan Markle are troubling. Paris is a prime example of just how distorted the coverage has become.
