Kate Middleton’s ‘Forensic Public Scrutiny’ Is Not the Same As Meghan Markle's Daily Struggles

The ongoing support for Kate Middleton from the British press has become a bit strange. This time, it’s about Kate’s breaking point with the ‘forensic scrutiny’ of the public during her public appearances. Kate’s ‘breaking point’ has been analyzed by SheKnows, which alludes to a comparison with Meghan Markle's well-known struggles within the royal family. Although the comparison tries to find similarities, the experiences of the two women in the royal family are very different, especially considering how the British media treats Meghan Markle and the online hate she faces daily.

Kate Middleton is reportedly recalibrating her work-life balance following what insiders describe as an overwhelming week. Public appearances accompanied by intense scrutiny seem to have taken a toll, as a former royal staffer shared with the Daily Beast. This revelation marks a rare moment when Kate's apparent challenges come to light despite a generally supportive portrayal by the British press. Kate Middleton’s ‘Forensic Public Scrutiny’ Is Not the Same As Meghan Markle's Daily Struggles.

Meghan Markle’s time as a royal has been heavily scrutinized by the media. Even as a private citizen, hundreds of hate pieces have been written about her. From the beginning, the press has often been aggressive and has sometimes shown racial bias towards Meghan, which has influenced a community of online trolls who make a living sending hate her way. In comparison, Kate is usually shielded from negative stories. She used the media to leak negative stories about Meghan. She allowed an incorrect ‘Meghan makes Kate cry’ narrative to spread for years, which was one of the narratives that started a coordinated online hate campaign against Meghan. Kate Middleton benefited from the hate and unfavourable media reporting of Meghan Markle. Now it’s hard to read about her ‘breaking point’ with the public scrutiny. In reality, the British media criticizes Meghan, leading a hate campaign against her, while protecting Kate at all costs.

The media reports show that the Princesses’ struggles and experiences can't be compared. Meghan’s narrative has been full of problems and hate, with everything she does being analyzed and criticized. This has affected her mental health and well-being. She lost her unborn baby for crying out loud. Kate’s story doesn’t seem to be looked at closely at all by the media, and her good reputation stays intact.

If Kate had faced a similar media attack as Meghan, she wouldn’t show her face in public, or work for that matter.  The British press has generally supported Kate, giving her protection that Meghan didn't get. This difference is important and suggests the need for fairer media coverage that respects both women's roles and struggles in the royal family. Even if Kate struggles in her role, we don’t know it because the Media put her on this pedestal, the princess who never puts her foot wrong.

The truth is, the only thing Kate and Meghan have in common is that they both married into the royal family. Their experiences differ because they live in different media environments. Kate Middleton’s ‘Forensic Public Scrutiny’ Is Not the Same As Meghan Markle's Daily Struggles.
