Fall In Love With Yso Syöte In Finland Like I Did

I recently had an unforgettable journey in Syöte Mountain in Finland during the magical winter season, and I think it's worth sharing. I hope my fellow nature lovers will find this experience thrilling and fall in love with Syöte like I have. Because I honestly did fall in love with Yso Syöte in Finland.

From the moment I arrived at Rovaniemi, I got picked up by my host and drove through Rovaniemi’s famous Santa Clause Centre, where the town remained in a state of festivity year round. Even in January, my short visit to the Santa Clause Post Office was magical. Through the 2 hours drive from Rovaniemi to Syöte, the unusually bright rainbow sun welcomed me with blue, red, yellow, and orange rays. The local was just as astonished to witness the magical sky as I was. It was indeed a day Northern Light Show like no other.  The sky’s colors enchanted me and, later, Syöte’s snowy beauty. When I finally settled into my cottage for two weeks, I ventured into a hiking trip; it was like stepping into a postcard. The trails wind through serene snowy forests, with tall pine trees covered with snow and winter moss, which I am told is the most nutritious plant in Syöte.  Each branch is adorned with fluffy snow and forest moss, producing fresh oxygen for the region’s residents. Every step I took on the fresh snow beneath my boots created a sense of purpose, peace, and serenity, which you can only find in Syöte’s woods.

Within days, taking long walks in the Syöte mountains felt like a journey into a fairy tale out of this world. My friend called it a white wonderland. The world around me was calm and still, forcing my inner compass to match the external stillness. With only the gentle whisper of the occasional wind and the pine trees’ crackle, I became one with divine calmness. For the first time in a while, I felt like I could unload any burden; it gave me time to breathe, clear my mind, and appreciate the beauty of Syöte in winter. The more I walk alone in the snow and do so at night, the more my fear of darkness starts to disappear into relaxation and appreciation for the darkness and the peace it brings to me.

Then came the incredible experience of cross-country skiing. If you haven’t tried it yet, it is a must. Imagine gliding smoothly, at first, with much hesitation because you might lose your balance any minute, but with time, with much more confidence, gliding over soft snow-covered paths, feeling the cool breeze on your face, and working up a sweat. There’s nothing like feeling overly hot in the snowy mountains. At times, It was like flying over a white magical carpet that stretched as far as the eye could see. With a goal of 4km, the mystical white snowy carpet was endless. While skiing, I discovered hidden spots and breathtaking views, and even with many falls; I was eager to dust the snow off and keep going on the journey. Each kilometer is more beautiful than the last.

What makes Syöte truly magical during winter is how everything sparkles; I was never indeed in the dark, even during the darkest of the night. The bright northern sky has never disappointed me. A unique tranquility filled the air, combined with a gentle rustling of the cold from a distance, made me feel like I was indeed in the North, and at some point, I wondered when the great white walkers would brace me with their presence only to be rescued by Jon Snow and his wildlings friends. But I quickly realized that there were no white walkers or Jon Snow in these mountains, and it was just me and the hill and all of its friendly inhabitants.  While I was more likely to glimpse the stunning Northern Lights dancing overhead than to have John Snow rescue me from the race of ice creatures, I was not so lucky on this trip to experience either.

My time at Syöte Mountain offered more than a chance to find peace and connect deeply with nature, but a time to connect with the local people and experience the region's cuisine. With reindeer meal at the fancy Artic Hilltop restaurant overlooking the ski and snowboarding slopes, salmon soups at everyone's favorite spot, Romekievari after a long ski trip, the most delicious thin-crust smoked reindeer and blue cheese pizza I have ever tasted at the local Tunturi pub, and fresh local salmon made my trip. The breathtaking beauty and magic of the Syöte landscape are not the only reasons to visit. The fresh local fish and reindeer meat I was fortunate enough to enjoy during my time in Syöte gave me a profound gratitude. I was in awe to learn that there are more reindeer and saunas than people in Syöte.
